This Week on…

Throwback Movies

First! Let’s get something straight- I have been surrounded and felt the pressure of speaking in “Film Review Theory” for ages. Enough!

This is my crappy little journal and we are here to have the most simple thoughts on media. Your girl has spent too many conversations on cinephile porn, she’s tired.

Working Girls

Working Girls, not at all to be confused with the rom-com WORKING GIRL. Very different movie!

1986 was a LONG time ago and we now have 40 years of desensitization layered on us. So, for any millennial watching, it gives Pretty Woman’s minimally funded, indie, gray cousin.

It’s hard to take its desire to be an “honest look into the lives of prostitutes” seriously when today we have White Underbelly flooding us with traumatizing portraits (although I don’t like WU’s perspective).

Still, Lizzie Borden’s work (her name though!) deserves modern views. She really created a time capsule and a lane by treating sex work as WORK. Plus… according to wiki, Harvey Weinstein blackballed her career, so now I have to encourage a comeback for her : )

3,000 Years of Longing

Not so much of a throwback, but on a bed rot Sunday, one needs a movie to love. 3YL is a movie for those of us who know what it is to yearn. If you have ever felt the pain of desiring a bottomless measure of love and thought “I want our solitudes to be together, i want THAT love professed in ageless tales”… give this movie a watch. I’m sad that people don’t talk about it more often, Tilda Swinton and Idirs Elba are a duo you didn’t know you needed. Ugh… it just makes my heart swell!

The Cell

Why don’t we talk about The Cell more?! I mean, besides the overdone “serial killer” script, it’s such a fun visual film. Why hasn’t Tom Foden worked more? His set design was fabulous for a 1999 surreal/bdsm set. AND as a JLO lover, it has to be one of her best movies…not to mention we love a young Vince Vaughn. Anyways, if you haven’t seen it, go now!

Road House

What Casting Director deserves an award for giving us young(ish) Sam Elliott and Patrick Swayze in one movie?! DAMN. But 1989 was on some wild ish. Apparently we needed action movies for blue collar men so bad, that we took the world of bar bouncers and made them karate superhero’s… in Jasper Missouri! Amazing.

The soundtrack to this movie though was CHEFS KISS. A good groove. 10/10 for nostalgia.
